Allison Transmission reported that several Chinese mining equipment manufacturers have exported trucks equipped with Allison WBD (wide body) series transmissions to South America, Asia and the Middle East, expanding their global business.
The company says its WBD series increases productivity, improves maneuverability and reduces costs for off-road mining trucks. Designed specifically for wide-body mining trucks (WBMDs) operating in demanding duty cycles and harsh environments, the Allison 4800 WBD transmission delivers an expanded torque band and higher Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW).
In the first half of 2023, Chinese mining equipment manufacturers such as Sany Heavy Industry, Liugong, XCMG, Pengxiang and Kone equipped their WBMD trucks with Allison 4800 WBD transmissions. According to reports, these trucks are exported in large quantities to Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Colombia, Brazil, South Africa and other countries and regions. Open pit mining and transportation of ore is carried out in Africa, the Philippines, Ghana and Eritrea.
“Allison Transmission is pleased to maintain a long-term relationship with a major mining equipment manufacturer in China. Allison Transmission is able to meet customers’ special requirements,” said David Wu, general manager of Shanghai Allison Transmission China Sales. “In keeping with the Allison brand promise, we will continue to provide reliable, value-added propulsion solutions that deliver industry-leading performance and total cost of ownership.”
Ellison says the transmission delivers full throttle, high-torque starts and easy hill starts, eliminating manual transmission problems such as shift failures on hills that can cause the vehicle to skid. In addition, the transmission can automatically and intelligently shift gears based on road conditions and grade changes, keeping the engine running continuously and increasing the vehicle’s power and safety on inclines. The transmission’s built-in hydraulic retarder assists in braking without thermal reduction and, in combination with the constant downhill speed function, prevents overspeeding on downhill grades.
The company says the patented torque converter eliminates clutch wear common to manual transmissions, requiring only regular filter and fluid changes to maintain peak performance, and the hydraulic torque converter actuation reduces mechanical shock. The transmission is also equipped with predictive features that proactively alert you to transmission condition and maintenance needs. The error code is displayed on the gear selector.
WBMD trucks operating in harsh environments often haul heavy loads, and Ellison said trucks equipped with WBD transmissions can withstand frequent starts and stops and avoid the potential breakdowns that come with 24-hour operation.
